“Jazz Around Town”

LA Jazz Scene
December 1, 2002

During the past few years, Judy Chamberlain has become a major force in Southern California’s jazz scene. As Musical Director for Spazio, the Biltmore Hotel’s Gallery Bar and Shelly’s Courthouse Bistro, she books an average of 60 nights of live jazz in clubs every month, which helps to account for jazz’s improving health and growth on the West Coast. In addition, she performs as a versatile singer and bandleader in a variety of venues and situations.

Recently she performed at Loews in Santa Monica.

Judy Chamberlain was in top form that night, singing fresh versions of such songs as “Devil May Care,” “What Is There To Say,” the tender “A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square,” “At Sundown,” “The Last Time I Saw Paris” and “Memories Of You.” The singer pays close attention to dynamics and pacing, knows the value of the words she interprets, swings lightly on ballads and puts on a memorable performance.

Judy Chamberlain can also be heard frequently at the Biltmore, often with guitarist Al Viola, and will perform with her seven-piece band for a high-profile Los Angeles jazz club’s New Year’s Eve celebration.
